Here are a couple of spots I like outside of Salvation Army and Goodwill that have locations in multiple states.

Sunshine Thrift has Florida and Michigan locations and they have monthly 50% off sales and a mailing list.

Plato's Closet is a franchise with locations in over 40 states, most items will be over $5 but you won't have to dig because they're very organized.
